about the Short Stick Shift Handle
Q: What finishes are available for the Short Stick?
A: The Short Stick is available for the stock, factory Hurst, and SLP shifters (52501) in stainless steel and black. The Short Stick is available for the aftermarket Hurst and Pro 5.0 shifters (52502) in black only.
Q: Why isn't the Short Stick available in stainless for the aftermarket Hurst?
A: I used to carry the Short Sticks in stainless for the aftermarket Hurst at one time, however, when the machine shop made the large bend that is required, they had to heat the stainless rod in order to make the bend as stainless is very strong and hard to bend. When they do this, it scuffs and discolors part of the rod around the bend area. I would clean this up as best I could with Scotch-Brite pads and steel polish but it was hard to get completely out and did not look "perfect" as I like so I discontinued them in stainless.
Q: What is the difference between stainless and black?
A: The difference between stainless and black is really just personal preference. The stainless is 304 stainless and has a slightly polished finish. The black is 10-18 steel and is primed then painted with 2 coats of black enamel. Stainless is a little stronger but since these handles are about 6 inches in overall length, either will be plenty strong. The stainless costs more because it's harder to machine and also costs more for the raw material. Some people like the way polished stainless looks rather than black but I sell a lot of each. Once the Short Stick is installed, you will rarely, if ever, see it since it will be under the shift boot.
Q: Will my stock knob or SLP Hurst knob fit the Short Stick?
A: Yes, the Short Stick is made with the exact same thread size as the stock and factory Hurst stick so these knobs will fit.
Q: I have an MBA knob. Will it fit the Short Stick?
A: The MBA knobs should fit the Short Stick, however, shims may be needed to line up the logo on the knob and also to raise the knob up a bit since the MBA knobs have a deeper hole than the stock knobs.
Q: I have an aftermarket Hurst shifter with the white Hurst knob. Will it fit the Short Stick?
A: The white Hurst knob has a much smaller thread than the stock knobs. There is a Short Stick that will accept the white Hurst knob, however, it is a special order item since I don't get a lot of requests for it. Please e-mail me for details on ordering a Short Stick for the white Hurst knob (52503).
Q: What aftermarket shifters will the Short Stick fit?
A: Currently, the Short Stick is only available for the Hurst Competition Plus, Hurst Billet Plus and Pro 5.0 aftermarket shifters.
Q: Is there a Short Stick available for the B&M Ripper?
A: Currently, there is not a Short Stick available for the Ripper. The Ripper comes with a stick that is already fairly short and adding a shorter stick would not yield much of an effect.
Q: How difficult is the installation of the Short Stick?
A: The installation is simple and takes about 15 minutes or less to install. See the on-line installation instructions on the Short Stick page.
Q: Do I have to remove the whole console to install the Short Stick?
A: No. On the 97 and up cars, only the top portion of the console has to be removed. On the 96 and older cars, only the trim ring and shift boot need to be removed.
Q: What tools are required for installing the Short Stick?
A: The only tools required are a 7mm nut driver (7mm socket on screwdriver handle) and a ½" open end or box wrench.
Q: What do I get with the Short Stick?
A: With the Short Stick you get 2 high strength bolts and lock washers, and detailed illustrated instructions.
Q: Is there a Short Stick for the V6 5 speed (M5) shifters?
A: Currently the Short Stick is not compatible with the stock M5 shifters.
Q: What if I buy the Short Stick for the stock shifter, then later decide I want to buy an aftermarket Hurst or Pro 5.0 shifter? Can I exchange the 52501 for a 52502?
A: Some time ago, I used to allow exchanges for a small charge. However, since Afterthoughts took over as the main distributor for my parts, I have discontinued this policy. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Q: After I place an order, when is the Short Stick shipped?
A: When I receive payment for the Short Stick, it is usually shipped the next business day.
Q: Can I get my Short Stick delivered by any other method than Priority Mail?
A: Priority Mail is the lowest cost shipping method and usually gets to destinations within the US in 3 business days. If you prefer, the Short Stick can be shipped via UPS standard, UPS Next Day, UPS Second Day, Fed Ex Standard Overnight, or Fed Ex 2 day. These alternative methods will cost more than the standard $5.50 shipping charge. Please contact me for details.
Q: Is the Short Stick available anywhere besides through this web page?
A: Yes! I'm happy to annouce that Afterthoughts Auto (http://www.afterthoughtsauto.com) is my exclusive distributor for the Short Stick.
Q: What is the return policy regarding the Short Stick?
A: Return policy is as follows:
1) If, for any reason, the Short Stick does not fit, it can be returned for a refund or exchanged for a different model if there is one available. I don't envision this happening as the Short Stick has been tested on all the version shifters for which it has been made to work with.
2) If the Short Stick breaks under normal use, I will replace it.
3) If you just don't like the Short Stick, you can return it and I will refund your payment minus a 20% restocking fee. Shipping charges are not refundable.
Please note: If you have purchased your Short Stick from Afterthoughts Auto, please contact them directly for any returns.
Q: Once I install the Short Stick, the boot is kind of large since the Short Stick is so much shorter than the stock stick. What can I do about this?
A: The shift knob can be removed and the top of the shift boot can be tucked outside in to reduce the size of the boot without making any modifications.
Q: Is there any added noise with the Short Stick?
A: The Short Stick bolts directly to the shifter stem which is a direct metal-to-metal contact which is the same scenario as with all aftermarket shifters (e.g. Hurst, B&M, etc.). This ensures the most positive, accurate, and solid feel as possible. As with the aftermarket shifters, there may be some additional noise due to this metal-to-metal contact, however, it should be minimal if at all.
Q: Who makes the Short Sticks?
A: The Short Stick is a product that I designed and which a local machine shop manufactures to my specifications. The quality is outstanding as the machine shop makes parts for companies and Government contractors for industries like aviation and aerospace.
